The autumnal equinox is September 22nd — the first day of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the balance of time — day and night — when the energies of earth, as well as our own, begin the retreat into darkness until the new light of winter solstice arrives.
I first created the above image, “Equinox,” for a 2001 calendar published by the Sisters of St Joseph/Ministry of the Arts. The brief was to relate the senses of the seasons to the senses of the soul. “Equinox” was for the month of September — to represent the release of summer into fall, light into darkness. For me, this image also relates to the balance of life — the importance of releasing any day into night, any season of activity into rest.
