Healing With Sound
The healing power of sound is not new. The myths of cultures around the world speak of the universe being created through sound. Ancient mystery schools had a scientific, as well as spiritual, understanding of vibration as the essence of sound and its use as a creative and healing force.
Everything is vibration, including us—our bodies, thoughts, emotions, and very importantly, our voice. The vibrations of sound affect us on a cellular level. Therefore, the human voice can be a powerful instrument for healing—more so than an electronic instrument, due to the fact that it carries the waves of our consciousness. Through the sounds of our voice we can literally amplify the effects of our thoughts, creating intentions for healing—for ourselves, others and our environment.
Integrating poetry and song, these workshops focus on the vocal sounds of toning. Toning is a way of using the vibratory power of our voice, creating long sustained sounds with vowels, consonants or both. These sounds have a penetrating effect. Among the many benefits, toning can:
- Release tension, stress and pent-up emotions
- Balance the brain and sharpen mental clarity
- Soothe, relax and promote a sense of peace
- Energize and increase a sense of vitality
- Re-awaken healthy vibrations in the body
- Re-align one’s sense of empowerment
- Enhance the ability for deep listening
- Create harmony in group situations
When an organ or another part of the body is in a state of health, it will be creating a natural resonant frequency that is harmonious with the rest of the body. However, when disease sets in, a different sound pattern is established in that part of the body which is not vibrating in harmony. Therefore, it is possible, through use of externally created sound that is projected into the diseased area, to reintroduce the correct harmonic pattern into that part of the body which is afflicted and effect a curative reaction. Through the principle of resonance, sound can be used to change disharmonious frequencies of the body back to normal, healthful vibrations.—Jonathan Goldman, International Authority on Sound Healing
